This week we completed the installation and calibration of the drowning detection system in the new Tinnerbäcksbadet in Linköping, Sweden.
The drowning detection system is installed in the 50-meter pool, where the pool is monitored by cameras on the ceiling for the best overview of the pool, as well as in the diving pool, which is significantly deeper and is therefore monitored by cameras on the pool wall.
Tinnerbäcksbadet is Sweden’s largest swimming pool and one of the absolute finest. The large wooden beams, wooden panels and entire walls with plants provide an inviting and harmonious environment in the large premises.
Tinnerbäcksbadet will be inaugurated on April 22nd and we are incredibly proud to be part of this project and to be able to contribute to a enhaced safety.
In 2007, the Nordlandsbadet water park in Bodø became the first Norwegian site to install a computer vision system to detect a potential drowning in all its pools, including a wave pool and a diving tank. The new 25-meter pool, which is scheduled to open to the public in 2023, will also be equipped with the Poseidon drowning detection system: 16 detectors will be installed in the ceiling to provide an optimal aerial monitoring.

The 50-meter pool
at Marignac will be equipped with a Poseidon drowning detection system. The
Marignac pool has been open to the public since 1969 and is a listed historic
monument. It welcomes a large public, from families to experienced athletes.
The heated outdoor pool is open year-round. The installation will be completed
in the spring of 2022.
On November 23, 2021, the international laboratory SGS inspected the conformity of the Poseidon system recently installed at the Marche-en-Famenne swimming pool in Belgium. 7 pairs of cameras installed on the ceiling allow optimal observation of the 25 x 15 meter pool with a depth of 1.25 to 2.55 meters.
The inspection consisted of checking the conformity of the Poseidon system with the safety and performance requirements set out in the EN ISO 20380 standard. The report No. AX21-07764.001 drawn up by the SGS laboratory certifies that the computer vision system for drowning detection at Marche-en-Famenne meets all the requirements of the standard.
It should be noted that the detection performance observed at the time of the test was considerably above the requirements of the standard! Marche-en-Famenne is the 50th pool in the Benelux equipped with a Poseidon system.
COBB COUNTY, Ga – Gary Phillips was swimming laps at the Northwest Cobb YMCA.
“I think I was on lap eight. I felt a twinge in my heart and thought this is a heck of a place to have a heart attack,” said Phillips.
He blacked out and sunk to the bottom of the pool. Alarms started going off.
The YMCA uses a drowning detection system called Poseidon. Cameras surround the pool from above and below the surface of the water and constantly measure the movement of swimmers.
“If a person loses consciousness or sinks to the bottom of the pool the cameras pay attention to the rate of descent. If there is 10 seconds of no movement the alarms will sound,” said Megan Benvenuto, Director of the Northwest Cobb YMCA.
A poolside monitor shows the exact location of the person as well as the time they’ve been underwater.
“It saves valuable seconds a lifeguard might not see when they’re scanning,” said Benvenuto.
Lifeguards pulled Phillips from the pool. The staff started performing lifesaving measures and called in first responders.
“Of all the places I could be to have something like that happen, this is the place to be,” said Phillips.
Phillips had just learned about the Poseidon alert system a few months earlier.
The YMCA staff members recently received life-saving awards from Cobb Fire Rescue. They received a lifetime of thanks from Phillips.
“I thanked them profusely for saving my life and grateful we had the Poseidon alarm to alert people I was in trouble,” said Phillips.
Phillips underwent double bypass surgery and is in cardiac rehab now. He’s eager to get back in the pool.
“I’m looking forward to coming back to swim. I’m feeling great, it’s great to be alive,” said Phillips.
Every YMCA in Metro Atlanta is equipped with the Poseidon system at their indoor and outdoor pools.
